Monoliths for Memory is a response following visits to Nunhead Cemetery. Conceptually this series takes into consideration the function of the gravestones there and the ornament attached to the ritual of burial & religious iconography. The gravestones have been abstracted from their environment; this abstraction is intended to encourage reflection upon mortality & remembrance of the deceased.
Other than the adorning iconography the graves also sometimes featured portraits faded from weathering. Epitaphs written on the gravestones to the dead were often in disrepair with missing letters. The purpose of a gravestone to stand for a person’s life in memory for all time is both humbling & fascinating.
